It works by removing pollutants through adsorption, where the pollutants are attracted to the surface of activated carbon and retained in the same way a magnet attracts and holds iron filings.

Carbon filters also function as catalysts to alter the chemical composition of some pollutants. Activated carbon is ideal for removing chlorine, organic chemicals like pesticides, THMs such as chloroform, and many volatile organic compounds found in gasoline, solvents, and industrial cleaners.
